Sweet potatoes thread through some if my favorite dishes at @harvestbythepatiosd. The Seven Summits ($11 + $5 for tofu... I know...) stack bite-sized cuts of roasted summer squash with threads of onion, cubes of (of course) sweet potato and tender brown lentils, brown rice, and quiona over a lemony red pepper dressed salad of spinach and kale. Clearly marked vegan options here run deeper then most of the menus under The Patio umbrella—along with $10 seasonal bartender choice cocktails which currently pull highlights off the end of the citrus season blended with incoming summer herbs. • Full review is now up at @ediblesd. ___________________________________________ #VeganPetcoPark #HarvestbyThePatio #SweetPotatoes

Melting whipped coconut creme streams down the terraces of @barkindred's Pancakes ($12). Caramelized bananas sit stilly in the tar pit-like pools of bourbon butterscotch. Bitter bites of walnut accent the sweetness of the maple syrup yet to be poured over this breakfast cake. We quartered the dish evenly between dear friends @klean_slate and @theflowerchef who I don't get see nearly enough but hope the memory of these pancakes bring them back to San Diego sooner rather than later. ____________________________________________ #VeganBrunch #VeganBrunchinSanDiego #VeganPancakes

You know when you're so super hungry that you miss your freeway exit and have to dive 2 miles to the next one at which point you're too far to backtrack so you end up at KSandwichs because you just need something cheap and fast. That was me yesterday. I haven't had the chance to return since K rose from the ashes—but clearly I'm the last one because the bakery was brimming with sandwich-hungry people. • I ordered the No. 8 "Vegetarian" Banh Mi ($4.25), and fresh baked baguette stuffed with planked root vegetables under thick wormy logs of pickled daikon and carrot with jalapeño and cilantro. The menu says it comes with mayo but when I asked for "no mayo" the guy looked at me sideways and said "It doesn't come with mayo" which seemed to be the truth. There are few thing in San Diego that make me light up as bright as the Vegetarian Combo ($10.99) at Awash Market on El Cajon. A loyal fan for many years, the staff has come to know me as the girl with the big camera. Still, I hesitate to recommend this spot to everyone. The restaurant—carved out of the back of a liqueur store/market—offers a dark, loosely designed, dinning room with small scale Ethiopian art, an emergency exit, and crates of soda. It requires scooting past an active butcher station and speed racks of freshly made injera for sale to the local community. • The food can be hit or miss—sometimes coming out cool and under seasoned. But for every miss, there are three hits—days where the ginger and cardamom wafting from the red lentil Miser Wot makes my eye roll in ecstasy. Where the berbere and chickpea laced Shiro melts like velvet on the tongue. Where the fermented teff—with the tartness of sourdough and the suppleness of a fine crepe—folds like flesh around turmeric hued ribbons of sweetly braised cabbage. I happily schlep through the kitchen's off days—where the food served is still better then the best dishes at some other Ethiopian spots—to hit these highs. This is a place for those who care about craft and flavor, but who also have forgiveness in their heart for the hardworking staff who wade through the same fluctuations of work we all know is inevitable. _____________________________________________ #VeganEthiopian #VeganEthiopianinSanDiego #ShiroWat

I think @nativefoodscafe hit the nail when whipping up their seitan based veggie patty used in the Double Cheese Burger ($12). Two toothsome grain based disk—with a touch of snap in every bite—comes dripping with @followyourheart vegan cheese food, shaved red onion, ribbons of lettuce, cucumbers (were these suppose to pickles?), with BBQ sauce on the bottom and thousand island on top. • Historically, a "hamburger" was simply the use of bread to protect your hands while eating meat on the run. The bun was white fluffy background noise. Then our hippy forefathers got a hold of the burger and slapped it on a dry, gritty, whole wheat bun and told us to grin and bear it for our health. The punishment persists today—whole wheat buns with veggie burgers are the colon fried I didn't ask for. Here the bun's overpowering girth dulls the flavors of the burger... Ask me what foods I miss in California, and one of the answers will be Kathi Rolls. Walking the street of Chicago, I caught a glance of @bombaywraps. Here a tender unleavened wheat roti is rolled up with "samosa" seasoned smashed potatoes and peas, lightly pickled red onions, and a spicy mint cilantro chutney ($4.29). I grabbed a side of sweet and tart tamarind chutney and headed back to my hotel where the still hot roll quashed my midday hunger. Similar to its namesake samosa, but with chutney already inside, I quickly regretted not ordering the other 2 vegan flavors. Kathi roll are actually pretty plentiful in the freezer case of Indian markets, but I've yet to find a frozen one that is dairy free. I'm pretty sure I can get my hands on roti and make a facsimile at home because I cannot go another 8 years without one of these in my mouth. • PS- Based on the name of this restaurant, I'm guessing the food is fashioned after Frankies (West Indian) not Kathi Rolls (East India). With so much care put into sourcing tender fingerling potatoes, seasoning them with just the right amount of salt, and adding the searing sweetness of caramelized white onion, why do restaurants deliver a f-u of overly vinigarey hell that is Tabasco. How did this sour water become the default hot sauce in American. With the US finally embracing "spicy" (the word is smeared through marketing campaigns of our fast food overlords) I pray to the golden arches that millennials soon ruin Tabasco too. ________________________________________________ #HotSauce #HotSauceRant #DownwithTabasco

This is a deceiving photo. What you probably see is a cucumber avocado roll variant... But between the familiar are matchsticks of buttery grilled king trumpet mushrooms. Wrapped in a proportional layer of vinegared sushi rice, blanched green garlic leaves blanket the roll under a drizzle of vegan lemon mayo. Subtle on the eye, powerful of the tongue, the Special Vegan Roll ($12) at @aramichicago is a strong Chicago recommendation for those who crave craft in vegan sushi. _________________________________________ #VeganSushi #VeganSushiinChicago #AramiChicago
